Maui Sugar Squad’s Charity Bake Sale will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 18 in Suite B6, behind the stage at the Maui Mall. Attendees may enjoy complementary coffee and tea tasting while shopping for baked goods.

Four of Maui’s notable bakeries — Donut Dynamite, The Maui Cookie Lady, B3 — A Beach Bunny Bakery and Cupcake Ladies Catering Co. — along with Tea Love will be coming together to raise funds for the Maui Food Bank this holiday season.

The Maui Sugar Squad, as they were effectively named after graduating with the first class of the Maui Food Innovation Center’s accelerator program, is an ongoing collaboration between four Maui women entrepreneurs. Jennilin Alcain, owner of Cupcake Ladies Catering Co. says, “We are friends who share the same passion for what we do. This event is a fun way for us to give back to the community we love, and spend time together too.”

Irminne Van Dyken

Dietary choices and health topic of talk

“Immunonutrition: The Interrelatedness of Diet, Nutrition, the Immune System, the Microbiome, Telomeres, and Longevity,” is the title of a 7 p.m. talk Thursday by Irminne Van Dyken, M.D., at the J. Walter Cameron Center in Wailuku.

Van Dyken will discuss immunonutrition and the factors involved, and the ways dietary choices impact the health of the immune system. Topics include what people can do to ensure they are maintaining a healthy gut microenvironment; telomeres, why they are important, what they mean to longevity and how people can influence this; and dietary “biohacks” that enhance the immune system.

Van Dyken is a general surgeon at The Queen’s Medical Center, board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.

Open house at school for adults

The McKinley Community School for Adults — Maui Campus will have an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 179 Kaahumanu Ave. in Kahului.

There will be presentations regarding diploma programs each hour (9:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.), a thrift store from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and a food truck accepting cash only from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Christmas ball tickets available

The Hawaii Ball Room Dance Association will host a Christmas Ball from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Maui Beach Hotel Elleair Ballroom. The ticket price includes heavy pupu; a no-host bar will be available.

Dinner to celebrate Japanese culture

Members and the general public are invited to attend Japanese Cultural Society of Maui’s Oshogatsu Traditions Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 28 at Wailuku Hongwanji Mission social hall.

Mochi pounding and sampling will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and other activities starting at 6. Ozoni, a traditional New Year’s soup made with mochi and seasonal vegetables, will be served. Other dinner activities include sharing of information about other Japanese New Year’s traditions and playing Japanese games.

Tickets are limited to the first 100 people and are $10 for Japanese Cultural Society of Maui members (must present your membership card for one member-priced ticket) and $15 for nonmembers. They are available for purchase at Credit Associates of Maui, 1817 Wells St. in Wailuku until Dec. 22.

Diabetes group to meet on Wednesday

Maui Memorial Medical Center’s Diabetes Support Group will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Marion Hanlon Room at MMMC.

Maui author Jill Engledow will share insights she gained while collecting photos and researching her newest book, “Sugarcane Days: Remembering Maui’s HC&S,” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wailuku Public Library. Admission is free.

Free musical theater  at Kahului library

A free performance of “Pupule’s Planet in Peril” will be offered at Kahului Public Library at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

In this new musical theater production for children, a boy named Pupule learns about the impact of global warming on our oceans and about positive steps he can take to care for the Earth.

This 45-minute show is appropriate for youngsters in preschool through 5th grade.

Written by Maui playwright Derek Nakagawa, with original music by Kim Vetterli, “Pupule’s Planet in Peril” is produced by Maui Academy of Performing Arts. This performance at Kahului library is sponsored by Maui Friends of the Library.

Hale Makua topic for guest speakers

The Rotary Club of Maui will host Hale Makua’s Denise Thayer, director of development and marketing, and Daniele Sanchez, development and volunteer coordinator, as their guest speakers at its noon meeting Wednesday in the Maui Country Club Dining Room.

The speakers will provide information about Hale Makua’s Health Services and volunteer opportunities. Thayer has been with Hale Makua for eight years and oversees the organization’s fund development and communications programs.

For two years, Sanchez has been coordinating volunteers and supports Hale Makua development programs.

Rotary Club of Maui meetings are open to the public. The luncheon and meeting is $20 per person.

Author will speak about 2 new books

Author Jill Engledow will introduce her two latest books at the 7 a.m. Thursday meeting of the Wailuku Rotary Club at The Vineyard Food Co. in Wailuku.

“Sugarcane Days: Remembering Maui’s Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company” is a nostalgic picture book featuring images from the company’s in-house newspaper, the HC&S Breeze, from 1948 to 1968. In addition to vintage black-and-white photos, the book shares stories about the place of the plantation in the community and the innovative spirit of plantation workers.

The second book is “The Story of Lahaina,” a short but comprehensive history of the town that has survived and thrived through every era of Hawaii history.

Santa will visit Kahului library

Santa Claus is coming to Kahului Public Library at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Children of all ages are invited to hear stories with Santa and to receive a free book from Santa’s gift bag.

Santa will also be available for wish-whispering and picture-taking.

Association plans holiday dance

The Maui Puerto Rican Association will hold its holiday dance featuring live music of Wally Rita and Los Kauaianos from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at Heritage Hall in Paia.

The Kauai-based band specializes in traditional jibaro music and adds the lively sounds of salsa to its repertoire. A few country and western numbers lighten the flavor, appealing to a broad audience.

Advance-sale tickets are $20. Without tickets, admission at the door is $25 per person.

Proceeds from the dance benefit the Maui Puerto Rican Association’s scholarship fund.
